Animal Bytes: When to feed a roaming cat

Although it is a well-known fact that it is safer to keep cats indoors, there are some cat owners that continue to let their cats out to roam freely. We get many calls at the shelter from people who have “found” cats and feed the first time they see it. That’s not a good idea because the cat could be someone’s pet just out for a stroll.

So, how do you tell whether or not a cat is lost or just hanging around?

Once you feed a cat, it is likely to come back to the food source even if it is fed at home. Cats are not particularly loyal and will go where the food is. My brother’s cat spends more time at the neighbor’s house because he likes the menu. Just observe what a new cat does over a couple of weeks. If it’s coming and going but looks healthy, leave it alone. If it looks healthy and it is friendly but does not leave your property then you could get a cat collar and mark it with a short note that instructs, “If you own this cat, call this number” and insert your phone number. The owner will see the tag and call. Then if no one calls within five or six days, it is safe to assume the cat is lost. If you notice a cat losing weight or looking injured you can assume it is lost. People who feed their cats outdoors often wonder why there are extra cats hanging around. It’s no wonder. Feed indoors or on an enclosed porch or garage so other cats don’t have access to it. Take food up immediately after your cat is done. Don’t leave it out to snack on. People mean well taking in and feeding a stray but they should be bringing it to the shelter. Taking a cat in as soon as you notice it is not advised. If you find a pregnant cat you are sure is homeless, call the shelter right away. For those of you that let your cats outside, put a collar on it with some form of identification, such as a rabies tag or I.D. The tag is required by state law but this will also prevent your cat from being mistaken as lost.
