Pawtuxet Village Nursing Home has been cited by the state Department of Health for failing to administer medication properly to its patients for conditions including diabetes, hypertension and heart murmurs.

According to an inspection by the Rhode Island Department of Health, the nursing home also failed to perform tests for diabetes and check the pulse of patients when scheduled. In some instances, nurses failed to alert doctors when the patients’ blood sugar levels were too high or low.

The report by the Health Department also says that records show patients were treated improperly for pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores. In some cases, the review by the Health Department found that nurses didn’t reduce medications when instructed to do so by the patients’ doctors.

The nursing errors were found by records inspections performed by the Department of Health.

Anne-Marie Beardsworth, a spokeswoman for the Health Department, said that health inspectors were on a regularly scheduled visit when they found the errors, which took place over the course of the current year. There were in excess of 25 different violations, according to Health Department records.

The Health Department issued an immediate compliance order because it found that a patient was in immediate harm. It was delivered on Aug. 6. Administrators were unavailable for comment by press time.

The Pawtuxet Nursing Home is part of SunBridge Healthcare, which owns over 200 nursing homes nationally.
