Mayor Scott Avedisian has announced the distribution of $929,007 in Community Development Block Grant funds to benefit more than a dozen nonprofit agencies and a local neighborhood group. The funds will be awarded for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Public service grant awards are as follows: $15,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick for their Oakland Beach branch operations and $25,000 for gym dividers; $4,000 to City Year Providence for the Kent County Young Heroes program; $15,000 to Comprehensive Community Action for its senior dental program; $14,000 to Cornerstone Adult Services for activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s and $28,331 for center improvements; $2,800 to Day One for its Children’s Advocacy program; $12,200 to the EBC House for their victim safety and self sufficiency program; and $19,600 to the House of Hope for supportive services and $64,000 toward renovations to the Thomas Wilbur House in Apponaug.

In addition, Kent County VNA will receive $8,022 for its Hope for Health Clinic; Rhode Island Family Shelter will receive $19,000 for case management; Sensational Child has been allocated $7,500 for a Warwick employee development program; The Kent Center will receive $15,900 to aid victims of trauma and Westbay Community Action, Inc. has been awarded $10,300 for its Children’s Center case manager, $27,000 for a social services case manager; $5,000 for its emergency assistance program; $25,000 for the Home Repair program; and $57,454 toward renovations to their facility on Buttonwoods Avenue.

The Conimicut Village Association will receive $100,000 in this funding cycle to implement portions of their five-year master plans. According to Kevin Sullivan, community development director for the city, how those funds will be spent is to be determined by the village association. Funds in prior years have been used to support streetscape and building improvements. The city distributes money among six associations annually on a rotating basis.

The remaining funds – approximately $225,000 – are set aside for administrative and planning costs. An additional $125,000 is allocated for costs associated with the office’s housing rehabilitation program and another $121,000 will be used to purchase and renovate properties in Warwick to create additional affordable housing units.
