Theatre-By-The-Sea pays homage to Sinatra

Pictured from left, John Fredo, Casey Erin Clark, Karen Jeffreys and Jason Watson celebrate the mystique of "Ole' Blue Eyes" and the music he made famous in the Rhode Island premiere of the must-see musical revue, "My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra," being presented at Theatre By The Sea through June 14. For tickets, call 782-TKTS (8587) or visit www.theatrebythesea.com.
David Grapes, co-creator of “My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra,” is directing his own show at Theatre-by-the-Sea, opening the summer theatre’s 76th season.
The musical revue is a bit different from the usual fare of Broadway musicals, and I must admit that I was a bit apprehensive about listening to two men and two women singing nearly 60 of Sinatra’s greatest hits. Being a Sinatra fan, and a lover of the “oldies,” I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.
Grapes’ writing and direction keeps the two-hour show moving at a rapid pace, with songs intermingling with some well-known and little-known facts about Old Blue Eyes, plus some of his clever quotes. Grapes is a master of segue, including solos, duets and quartets to showcase the songs. The four singers together reminded me a bit of the Modernaires.
The stage resembles a bar room, with a most competent trio providing great sounds, under the direction of John C. Brown on the keyboards.
Opening with “Strangers in the Night” and closing with “My Way” and a reprise of “New York, New York,” the revue covers most of Sinatra’s biggest hits, plus a few you may not remember.
The cast is made up of veteran performers Casey Erin Clark, Karen Jeffreys, Jason Watson and John Fredo. Fredo was in the original cast and stands out as the best singer and performer in the group. His tap dancing added to the fun.
Fredo reminds me of Sinatra without trying to impersonate him. He has the moves, the phrasings, and the voice. The other singers were good, if not spectacular.
“My Way…” makes for a pleasant evening of entertainment, a nice way to start the season at TBTS, which traditionally brings in a smaller show (Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Forever Plaid”) while the actors rehearse for the blockbuster shows.
The sounds of Sinatra can be heard in the sleepy village of Matunuck through June 14. For reservations, call 782-8587. Tickets are $39-$49.
