CD's for Christmas

I’m a great supporter of giving the arts for Christmas, whether it is concert or theatre tickets or the latest CD’s. I’ve just previewed two great CD’s that I would love under my tree.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Night Castle” is their second non-holiday album after “Beethoven’s Last Night” back in 2000.

While there is nothing like seeing the orchestra in person, as we have done the past two years at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the next best thing is listening to their rock-opera style music.

There are 26 songs in the two-CD package, running the gamut from hard rock to classical and including a 68-page booklet featuring story, lyrics and full-color illustrations by legendary artist Greg Hildebrand.

The orchestra played their first single off the CD, “Nutrocker,” and it is like nothing I’ve ever heard before. Being a fan of classical music, it blows my mind to hear what this great orchestra can do with it.

A clever title for a clever CD, “U4IAA” features the Zeke Martin Project, led by Boston-based drummer Zeke Martin. There are seven great cuts on the CD, including great interpretations of the standards, “Summertime” and “Funny Valentine.”

If you like jazz, you’ll love this group, which also features sax player Sean Berry on “Freedom Jazz Dance” and “Afro Blue.” Keyboardist Yusaku Yoshimura is featured on “Naima” and “Sugar.”

The CD was recorded in Somerville, Mass. and is being promoted by Ginny Shea’s Mixed Media in Cranston.
