This Week at CCRI
The CCRI women’s soccer, ranked fourth in the country, begins play in the District tournament on Friday. The Lady Knights will play Mercer County CC at 2 p.m. in the semifinals. If they win, they’ll take on Monroe – ranked third in the country – on Sunday at 12 p.m., with a spot at the national tournament on the line.
Cross Country
The CCRI women’s cross country team traveled to Westfield, Mass., for the NJCAA Division III Northeast District Championship Meet and came home with a second-place finish. The team was led by three all-district performers. Jaden Riendeau (East Providence) was the team’s top finisher, placing third in a season-best time of 21:07.41. Therese Kerin (East Greenwich) finished fourth in 21:10.55. Both Kerin and Riendeau earned first-team all-district honors. Janelle Piche (Coventry) finished 12th in 24:02.27, getting a third-team nod. Sarah Brodeur (Westerly) placed 17th, Kayleigh Smith (Cumberland) finished 25th and Dinah Quintanilla (Lincoln) placed 29th. Overall, it was the Lady Knights’ second-best finish ever at the district championship. On the men’s side, two runners competed for the Knights. Brenden Dohoney (Warwick) earned third-team all-district honors for his 13th-place finish, which came on the strength of a season-best time. Rob Brothers (Cranston) placed 28th.
Men’s Soccer
The CCRI men’s soccer team headed to Dean College for the Region XXI tournament and came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Dean in the semifinals. The Knights dominated time of possession and had several opportunities to score in the first half, but they were unable to finish. Dean College made the most of an opportunity in the first half and that proved to be the game-winner. Dean went on to lose to Massasoit in the championship. Though the Knights’ season ended on a low note, they came home with several awards. Elton Moreira (Pawtucket), Revelino DaVeiga (Providence) and Alex Nahigian (Coventry) earned first-team all-region honors. Denis Peixoto (North Providence) was an honorable mention pick. “I was pleased with our performance on the field and look forward to improving next year,” said head coach Gabe Toro. “Our players can hold their heads up high knowing they played a great game.”
