The Warwick Co-op girls’ hockey team captured the DeCosta Division state title on March 17 with a 3-2 win over Mount St. Charles in Game 3 at Brown University’s Meehan Auditorium.
Warwick trailed Mount 2-0 in the second period, before Abi Given got the Lady Titans on the board to cut their deficit to one going into the third period.
In the third, Warwick’s top two offensive players – Kelsey Holmes and Madison Balutowski – would step up.
Early in the third, Holmes picked up the puck, cut to the middle of the ice and ripped a shot to the blocker side to tie the game at 2.
One minute, 19 seconds later, Balutowski rifled the game-winner over the glove of Mount goaltender Taylor Dill.
Just like that, the Lady Titans became the first public-school team to win a Division I and Division II girls’ hockey title, also becoming the first to achieve that feat in back-to-back seasons.
“It feels great,” Warwick head coach Dave Tibbetts said. “It’s still just as exciting for our girls. It’s still a big stage and it’s a stepping stone for our program. We’ve never won a Division II championship.”
