It isn't often that a private school can earn the moniker of "underdog."
La Salle was expected to claim another outdoor track state title, but Hendricken shocked its bitter rival with a 15-point victory overall for its first championship in six years.
The Hawks saw top finishes from Jon Celico in the pole vault and the 4x100 relay team of Ethan Pezzullo, Jared Grossi, Desmond Bernal and Kwity Paye.
Hendricken found itself all over the podium. Nick Williams (400-meter), Connor Sheridan (javelin), Mike Bittner (high jump) and the 4x800 relay squad all earned silver.
Among the bronze finishers were Paye (shot put), Evan Storti (discus), Derek Magno (javelin) and Ethan Sheridan (110-meter high hurdles).
The balanced attack allowed the Hawks to total 96 points, more than enough to pull off the unlikely upset.
