14 adults, 2 juveniles charged after stolen goods investigation leads to Cranston pawn shop

Fourteen adults and two juveniles have been arrested following the discovery of a “fencing” operation in which stolen merchandise was allegedly funneled through a Cranston pawn shop.

According to a joint release from Cranston Police Chief Col. Michael J. Winquist and Rhode Island State Police Col. Steven G. O’Donnell, the investigation – which began in December, and centered on the Gold & More Pawn Shop at 703 Park Ave. – resulted in the recovery of more than 200 items with an approximate value of $23,610.

Photographs of the recovered items can be found online through the Cranston Police Department’s website, www.cranstonpoliceri.com, or its Facebook page. Members of the public able to identify any of the items are asked to call the department at 401-477-5056. Anyone claiming ownership of any of the items will be asked to provide receipts, other proof of ownership and a police report documenting the theft.

Police said the investigation began when a Cranston patrol officer developed information that the pawn shop was being used to facilitate the purchase and sale of merchandise stolen from vehicles and homes in the city. Detectives subsequently infiltrated the operation and monitored “numerous transactions of stolen goods” involving individuals that frequented the shop, according to authorities.

Related activity in Warwick and West Warwick was identified during the investigation, police said, allowing officials to solve prior theft cases in those communities.

“I commend the efforts of all of the investigators who worked diligently on this case over the past two months,” Winquist said. “By dismantling this operation and making these arrests, the residents of Cranston will be less apt to become victims of individuals who profit from property crime and have total disregard for the security and safety we should all be able to enjoy in our homes. I am hopeful that we will be able to return additional items to the rightful owners. These items have not only monetary value, but in some instances sentimental value.”

“The collaboration between the Rhode Island State Police and Cranston Police Department is a major reason for the success of this investigation,” O’Donnell said. “I commend the leadership of Col. Winquist for his pro-active strategy in bringing all the defendants to justice.”
