Behind an MVP performance from senior Chris Duchesneau, the Pilgrim boys’ basketball team captured its first title in school history with a 65-55 win over Johnston at Brown University on March 1.
“It feels great,” Pilgrim head coach Mike Batalon said following the win. “These kids are unbelievable. They’ve been working hard since day one. I’m just so proud of them. We’ve come a long way over the season, improving and this is a great moment for us.”
That moment was made possible after the team really came together following a rough start to the season.
The Pats started the season just 1-3 before picking up steam going into the playoffs.
Pilgrim rolled into the semifinals, mildly upsetting Scituate, 48-33, setting a finals matchup with Johnston.
And Pilgrim would make the most of its first trip to the finals in 17 years.
Duchesneau locked down Johnston leading scorer Ryan Yankee on defense, while also scoring a team-high 18 points for the Pats.
Ethan Schneider also posted 14 points and seven rebounds, and Tyrone Weeks capped off an impressive freshman campaign with 13 points and seven boards.
The win propelled the Pats to their first state tournament berth, as well, earning a No. 15 seed in the 16-team tournament.
Pilgrim’s historic achievements and ability to bring the community together lands it at No. 2 on our 2015 countdown.
“It’s the first time that Pilgrim has been in the finals in 17 years,” Batalon said. “We had a lot of alumni and students here tonight. The school and the Pilgrim community really got behind us, and we really appreciate that.”
