Statewide school survey now available

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) today launched the 2019 administration of SurveyWorks, the state’s school culture and climate survey. Through SurveyWorks, all Rhode Island educators, students, and families have the opportunity to share honest feedback about education in our state and their experiences in our public schools.

Surveys cover everything from professional learning for educators, to engagement of students, to whether or not parents believe their child’s school provides a safe and inclusive environment. The SurveyWorks window runs from January 14 through March 31, 2019, with most schools identifying a three-week window in which to focus their survey efforts.

“SurveyWorks is a valuable resource for policymakers, communities, schools, and families, so that, collectively, we can ensure that we are meeting the needs of students,” said Ken Wagner, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education. “Survey results give us unique insight into the experiences of students, families, and educators. Their feedback is critical to forming responsive policy, and to fostering the kinds of supportive and welcoming school cultures that empower all students to succeed.”

Over the past three years, RIDE has made SurveyWorks a priority, encouraging school communities to analyze their data and use it to respond to suggestions from their stakeholders. Last year, more than 119,500 Rhode Islanders completed the survey.

To further elevate and prioritize the survey, it is also a central component of the state’s new School and District Report Card platform. On the landing page for each school and district, their individual SurveyWorks results are embedded, allowing users, and families, in particular, to get a better sense of the strengths and challenges facing their school community.

“No single measure can tell the full story of a school, which is why our Report Card platform aims to deliver a holistic look at school performance, from test scores and absence rates to SurveyWorks. The survey puts student and family voices at the center of our decision-making, and I encourage all schools to engage your communities with innovative approaches to driving up participation,” Wagner added.

SurveyWorks is administered through an online platform by Panorama Education, RIDE’s survey partner, and is accessible on computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. Responses are completely anonymous and confidential, and surveys are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Unlike years past, which included a Special Education Family Survey, RIDE will offer a single survey for all families, including those with children in out-of-district special education placements. By offering a single survey, RIDE hopes to increase participation and create an easy, accessible, and convenient survey experience for all families.
