237 ‘trot’ Thanksgiving morning before turkey dinner

Some were there to rationalize, or justify, all the pies they knew they would be sampling later in the day. Others were there because they love running a 5K, and still others gathered at City Park early Thanksgiving Day morning because they wanted to be outside and help a good cause at the same time.

The occasion was the second annual Rotary Club of Warwick Turkey Trot, an event conceived by club member Tom Sanford aimed at bringing the city’s high school communities together to assist Westbay Community Action Marketplace. Runners and walkers brought canned goods for the marketplace and, in addition, registration proceeds amounting to more than $1,200 will go to Westbay.

Sanford reported 237 participated in the trot this year as compared to 67 the first year. And he said 375 food times were donated, filling the bed of his pickup truck. Twenty club volunteers worked the event, handing out water bottles along the route. Prior to the start of the 5K, which Sanford did by dropping his turkey hat from a stepladder, runners and walkers limbered up by stretching under the guidance of physical therapists from the Warwick Physical Therapy Institute.

A number of walkers and runners also brought along their dogs, which along with some of the costumes made for a carnival-like atmosphere.

As Sanford pointed out Friday, participants along with Rotary club members had cleaned up and left the park by 9:30, giving everyone ample time to get wherever they were going for Thanksgiving dinner, or as surely many did, in time to get home and finish cooking.
