3. Titans cap impressive season with first-ever title - Nov. 10

The Toll Gate girls’ soccer team ran a gauntlet to its first-ever state championship, taking down the defending Division II champion and runner-up in the process.

The title pursuit started with an easy win over North Smithfield in the opening round, using two goals from Marisa Giard and Hannah McNulty to breeze past the Northmen, 4-1.

Next up, though, would be cross-town rival and reigning state champion Pilgrim. The Titans showed resilience as their one-goal lead was erased in the waning minutes of the second half, forcing overtime.

Toll Gate and Pilgrim battled to two scoreless extra periods, resulting in penalty kicks. The Titans got the better of the Pats, winning the shootout 3-1 and moving on to a championship matchup with Coventry.

It would be deja vu for the Oakers, as they also lost to a Warwick team the year before in the title game.

McNulty would handle all the scoring for Toll Gate, notching a hat trick to carry the Titans to a 3-2 victory over Coventry.

“When I saw the clock winding down I was like the first championship in school history for Toll Gate soccer, it’s happening,” Toll Gate head coach Lonna Razza said after leading the Titans to the pinnacle.
