3 bands to play at Warwick Elks barbeque to benefit homeless

Angelo Manni’s words were few but came across with as much impact as a blast from a cannon.

“They fought for our home,” Manni, a musician publicist for a Warwick-based band named Mother Bogart, said Saturday. “Now we fight so they can have one.”

In short, Manni was drumming up support – as well as issuing a statewide invitation – for people to attend Saturday’s “Fight against Homelessness” that will benefit all homeless veterans in Rhode Island.

The event, which will feature three of the state’s top bands – as well as foods prepared and served by Chef Rob DeReamer’s Black Dog Barbeque – will be held this Saturday, July 14, from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Tri-City Elks Lodge that’s located at 1915 West Shore Road in Warwick.

The “Fight against Homelessness” will be held on Lodge 14’s spacious ground that’s officially known as Rossi Park, which was dedicated to veterans of all branches of the armed forces three years ago.

“Helping veterans – especially those that are homeless – is an on-going credo here at the Tri-City Elks Lodge,” said Lori Eaton, Past Exalted Ruler (PRE). “We don’t like that there are still homeless veterans, so we’re always looking for new fund-raising ideas that will help the H-PACT … that’s Trailer No. 37 the clinic for homeless veterans at the Providence VA Hospital.”

Saturday’s day-and-night fundraiser may be the most unique event the Tri-City Elks have hosted and worked tirelessly to present in recent memory.

For starters, there will be three bands beginning with the 4:00 appearance of Joint Custody. That will be followed by Sundance and Mother Bogart, an eight-piece group based out of Warwick serving as the night’s headliner and event presenter.

Saturday’s “Fight against Homelessness” will also feature a menu prepared by Black Dog BBQ, served especially for this event.

Meanwhile, Tri-City’s famed Pat and Gayle Tiki Bar will be open, Lodge 14’s fire pit will be lighted, and local food trucks will also be on site selling their wares.

“We’re urging people to come join the fight against homelessness among our veterans,” Manni added. “Many of our band members have friends that are veterans and none of us – or anyone for that matter – likes knowing there are veterans out there without a home.”

Moreover, all proceeds from Saturday’s “Fight against Homelessness” will go directly to H-PACT – Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team – based at the RI VA Hospital in Providence.

Trailer 37, as Eaton explained, is the clinic for homeless veterans where they can get food, clothing and hygiene needs. He said the Tri-City Elks community is “always making donations” that range from $400 to $800 as well as granting money they received from the Elks National Foundation that are especially ear-marked for helping homeless veterans.

Thus, Tri-City’s credo – Elks Care, Elks Share – will, as Eaton, Manni, and DeReamer are hoping, reach an all-time high as far as raising money for the fight against homelessness among veterans.

So, if you like pulled pork sandwiches, dry rubbed and smoked chicken wings and honey butter cornbread, Saturday’s event will have those and more.

If you like music – and dancing – talented troupes like Mother Bogart, Sundane and Joint Custody will be playing throughout what promises to be a fun-and-food-filled event.

Tickets are on sale and priced at only $20. People who’d like further information or to reserve tickets or make a monetary donation to H-PACT should call the Tri-City Elks Lodge at 737-9510.
