When Scituate senior Taylor Parker was in need of a senior project idea, she quickly knew exactly what she would pursue.

Her idea was to honor late friend and former Warwick basketball player Jared Carpenter, who passed away last summer in a dirt biking accident.

Carpenter, who was 14 years old at the time of his passing, played basketball for the Warwick Police Athletic League. Parker, who referees basketball at the recreation level, was family friends with Carpenter and felt that honoring him would be a great idea for her senior project, and to help bring the community together.

Parker’s tribute came in the form of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which will take place at Scituate High School on Saturday, March 30th.

“After attending his vigil and seeing the community come together and knowing that I had to pick a senior project, I thought that it was the perfect opportunity to contribute and to be able to give back to the community. Everyone has been supportive, family, friends, it was just a great opportunity to organize a charity event in memory of Jared,” said Parker of her inspiration for the idea.

Jared played numerous sports along with his siblings, but basketball was always at the top of the list. Parker looks forward to showing people Jared’s passion for the sport.

“I refereed Jared and his brother and watched them grow up as basketball players. I thought that this was a great opportunity to show everyone that this was one of his main sports and this is what he loved to do,” said Parker.

There are currently 17 teams that are slated to participate in the tournament, and Parker projects to see well over 20 by this Friday’s sign up deadline. Parker and company have been pleased with the support that the community has shown, and hopes to put on a great show come March 30th.

“It’s been so great. I really don’t have words for it,” said Parker. “It will be a great experience for the entire community to come together.”

The tournament will be held on March 30th at Scituate High School. The deadline to sign up is this Friday (March 1st). The cost is $20 per team, and teams may have up to four players. The tourney is set to begin at 12 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. Admission fees are $3 for students, $5 for adults, while children 10 and under are admitted for free.
