3rd graders 'test drive' their new dictionaries

Posted

For the 15th consecutive year, the Rotary Club of Warwick provided dictionaries to all of the city’s third graders, whether they are in public, private or parochial schools.

On Friday, club members visited schools across the city to deliver nearly 1,000 books to students, with a special celebration held for the 39 third graders at Lippitt Elementary School. There, students were greeted by school and city officials, including Mayor Scott Avedisian, Superintendent Philip Thornton and Director of Elementary Education Lynn Dambruch, in celebration of the event.

School Principal Martin Susla also welcomed Rotary president Oliver Brady and past president Ed McDonough, who made sure everyone received a dictionary. Each edition had a sticker on the back of the front cover, highlighting the four tenants that Rotary follows as an organization: Is it the truth, is it fair to all concerned, will it affect goodwill, will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Students were then challenged to test drive their dictionaries, which also included math, civic and encyclopedic references along with word definitions. Students turned to page 373, where they found a chemical name that’s the longest English word. They found a complete list of U.S. presidents, which they were quizzed on.

Students also discovered page 537, which introduced the students to sign language. They were then free to explore the books amongst themselves before giving a round of applause in appreciation of their gifts.  BOOKS 1:
