4. Sustained six-cess: Hawks edge Rams for sixth straight state title - Dec. 8

The Bishop Hendricken football team once again stands alone at the top of the high school football mountain in Rhode Island, capturing its sixth consecutive state championship.

The last time the Hawks were not featured in a Division I Super Bowl was back in 2008, when La Salle bested Barrington, 31-6. The next season, Barrington notched its second title in five years when it shut out the Hawks, 21-0. It was Hendricken’s third Super Bowl loss in four seasons.

Then, the tune changed.

Hendricken edged Portsmouth in 2010, then upended two undefeated La Salle squads in 2011 and 2012. A 45-34 shootout win over Cranston East in 2013 extended the streak to four before a 32-7 blowout victory over La Salle made it five.

Then, on Dec. 5, 2015, Hendricken made it an unprecedented six in a row when it defeated the Rams for the fourth time in five years, 24-20. The Hawks overcame a fumble from quarterback Chris Hindle at their own 26-yard line with just more than a minute to go to secure the win.

The Rams didn’t gain a yard on the ensuing drive, and an incompletion from quarterback Jace Pena deep down the right sideline sealed the Hawks’ win.

“This win was a little special because last year was unchartered territory, this year is unchartered, no one’s ever won this many in a row and I think that’s a testament to these kids and coaches,” Hendricken head coach Keith Croft said. “The way the Super Bowl played out, this one was one of our stranger ones.”
