The Hendricken basketball team lost to Classical in the Division I tournament, but that didn’t break its season.

The Hawks had their sights set on a state championship, and they would achieve their goal.

Hendricken powered its way through the state tournament as the No. 2 seed, taking care of No. 15 Johnston at CCRI’s Knight Campus in the opening round. It then went on to rout Portsmouth in the Elite 8 at Brown University’s Pizzitola Center.

That set up a rematch between Hendricken and Classical in the Final Four, and the Hawks would get their revenge, downing the Purple at The Ryan Center to earn a spot in the state final against the Rams.

Hendricken took a 7-point deficit into the half against La Salle, but a 17-2 run to start the second half sparked it to a 62-57 victory.

Justin Mazzulla, the game’s MVP, and Trevor Lawton each led the Hawks with 14 points apiece, while Kyle Henseler and Preston Santos each had 10 and Dimitri Rosa netted nine.
