In tight game, Patriots lose to Quakers

The Pilgrim Patriots softball team fell to the first-place Moses Brown Quakers 4-2 at home on Tuesday evening.

Moses Brown sophomore Liv Murray had two hits, including a two-run double that broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning and gave Moses Brown the victory.

“That was a very good game,” Pilgrim head coach Paul Kennedy said. “It felt like a playoff type atmosphere, like the type of game you might see in June against the best team in the state. Moses Brown, they’ve earned that, they are the best team in the state and I think we gave them a very good game. The better team won today, good for them, but we stayed with them and that’s what we’re taking from this. We now know that we can stay with them.”

Sophomore Emily Carter started in the circle for the Pats and pitched a complete-game, giving up four runs on 11 hits and striking out three.

Carter has performed well in the absence of Caitlyn Fallon, who has been unable to pitch the last two weeks because of a back injury.

“I can’t say enough about her,” Kennedy said. “She stepped up for us with an injury to Cat and she stepped in and has done more than we could have asked from her. She had them off-balance. They got to her a little bit there in the seventh, but she had them off-balance for six innings and she pitched one heck of a game. She really did.”

Kennedy said the team is going to take it easy with Fallon and let her heal up for later in the season.

“She’s not ready yet. We expect her later, we need her later. She’s our horse, but I can’t say enough good things about what Emily has done filling in for her. She’s been super.”

After three scoreless innings, Pilgrim got two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and Mackenzie Hough at second base, sophomore shortstop Taylor Suffoletto blasted a double to center field over the glove of Krissy Gately and drove in Hough to give the Pats an early 1-0 edge. Then, with runners at second and third, freshman Madison D’Amato hit and infield single and scored Suffoletto to put Pilgrim up 2-0.

“Madison, she’s been our leading hitter,” Kennedy said. “Hitting over .500 early in the season, doing very well and I’m very happy with what I’m seeing out of her as a freshman. She’s going to stay in that leadoff spot for a while I think. She’s a very talented hitter.”

In the top of the fifth, Moses Brown got a run back. With two outs, junior Emma Campbell hit a laser by a diving second baseman and it rolled all the way to the fence for a triple. Then, Janel Gamache, a senior, drove Campbell in with a single and pulled Moses Brown within 2-1.

During the top of the sixth, Moses Brown tacked on another run and tied it. With runners at second and third, senior Sabrina Liston hit a sacrifice fly to score Celia Macari from third and knotted the game at 2.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Moses Brown’s Gamache reached first base after a ground ball at the shortstop, who couldn’t make a clean play. Next, Ali Blanchard hit a single to center and put runners at the corners. Then, Murray launched a bomb into the gap in right-center to score Blanchard and Gamache and put Moses Brown on top 4-2.

Moses Brown were able to comeback because Gamache, who relieved Blanchard in the fourth inning with her team trailing 2-0, retired 12 out of the 13 batters she faced. Seven of those outs came by way of the strikeout.

Moses Brown remains undefeated at 5-0, while Pilgrim falls to 4-2.
