Warwick beaches targeted for coastal cleanup Saturday

Posted

More than 2,000 Rhode Island volunteers are expected to help the world’s largest marine litter cleanup this Saturday. Warwick cleanups will be held at Apponaug Cove, Chepiwanoxet Point, Conimicut Point, Longmeadow Fishing Area, Oakland Beach,

Rocky Point, Salter Grove and Warwick City Park from 10 a.m. to noon.

Save The Bay and thousands of local volunteers will join a global community of more than 500,000 volunteers working for trash-free seas during the 32nd annual International Coastal Cleanup. Trash has made its way to all reaches of the world’s oceans, causing countless negative effects on ocean life and coastal communities, including Narragansett Bay.

During last year’s International Coastal Cleanup, 2,205 volunteers removed 14,911 pounds of trash from 87 sites around the state. Of the 151,745 pieces of trash, 32 percent were cigarette butts and wrappers, 24 percent were beverage-related items and 20 percent were tiny pieces of plastic and foam. The U.S. Senate recently passed bipartisan legislation, the Save Our Seas Act, co-sponsored by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, to address the marine debris epidemic affecting America’s oceans. Data from the International Coastal Cleanup was a key part of testimony supporting that bill.

Volunteers from "Save-The-Bay" and "Friends of Warwick Ponds" already got a head start on this 2 weeks ago. They collected over 20 large trash bags of trash from the Oakland Beach area showing the pride they feel for our local environment.

    Great job folks.
