A “fun” raiser

Ward 5 Councilman Ed Ladouceur wasn’t expecting to raise much money, if any, when he and the ward committee planned a Saturday picnic at Delgiudice Park. Individual tickets were $15 and family tickets $25. But then Ladouceur, who is running unopposed, was looking to raise fun rather than funds. And on that basis the event was a success, especially the pie-eating contest that pitted the councilman against Democratic City Committee Chairman Rob Farrell, Ward Committee Chair Joseph Stanelun and two youthful volunteers. City Council President Donna Travis assumed the role of chief justice before contestants, hands by their side, went face down into chocolate cream pies made by Lisa Stanelun. When the three minutes were up and even though Farrell had consumed – rather sucked up – all but the crust of his pie, the adults were disqualified for having raised their hands from under the table. Ladouceur and the committee are thinking of making the picnic an annual event…guaranteed, there will be pies. (Warwick Beacon photos)
