A proud season for our communities

It’s a special time in Rhode Island.

Winter has faded into the rearview mirror, and we look ahead to long, bright days spent enjoying the outdoors in the company of loved ones and friends. As the sun shines on our state, so does our sense of community glow brightly.

The Memorial Day holiday serves as an unofficial start to the season. Both somber and celebratory, it brings into focus what binds us together. We reflect on, and express our enduring gratitude for, those who have given their all in service to our nation. We also enjoy the freedom made possible by their continued sacrifices.

Graduations, too, bring out the best in Rhode Islanders. Already, students from the Community College of Rhode Island, the University of Rhode Island and other local institutions have walked proudly across the stage to receive their diplomas. In the weeks to come, many others – including high school graduates – will revel in their achievements and mark the start of new chapters in their lives.

These young people, clad in caps and gowns, embody our shared aspirations for the future. Their accomplishments owe to years of care and effort on the part of families, neighbors, educators and many more.

Each class carries forward the unique character and traditions of its school, city or town. Paths will diverge, making for some bittersweet moments. Our young people will go on to varied pursuits – the workforce, service in the military, higher education – but their roots will always lie in the Ocean State.

We congratulate this year’s graduates, and wish them great success and happiness going forward. To those who made it all possible – parents and guardians, teachers and administrators, coaches and tutors, neighbors and loved ones – we say thank you for a job well done. All of us share in this moment of pride.
