A minimum-security inmate who walked away from a work detail on Monday has been apprehended.

Keurys Pena, 25, of Providence, with an alias of Michael Santana, was taken into custody by members of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Rhode Island State Police. He was apprehended on Daboll Street near Updike Street in Providence without incident.

Police said Pena was working at the Prison Industries Building on the Adult Correctional Institute (ACI) grounds in Cranston at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Monday when he walked from the scene.

State police said Pena is serving a 4-1/2 year sentence for breaking and entering into a dwelling. His criminal record includes resisting arrest, breaking and entering, driving without consent of an owner and narcotics-related charges.

Pena is set to appear in Third Division District Court in Warwick this morning for arraignment on a charge of escape from a correctional institution, which carries a possible sentence of up to three years or a $500 fine.
