After the Toll Gate girls’ volleyball team dropped down to Division II from Division I this fall, it was looking to make a significant improvement.
It turned out that it would thanks in large part to the play of senior captain Jamie Hopgood.
Behind the play of Hopgood and Ashley Chin, the Titans jumped from only one win in D-I in 2013 to six wins this fall in D-II.
For Titans’ head coach Andrew Bevilacqua, Hopgood’s veteran leadership was just what his program needed – a program that was in dire need of some solidity.
“She came in everyday and made everybody a better player,” Bevilacqua said of his senior captain.
For her efforts this season, Hopgood was tabbed an R.I. Volleyball Coaches Association Third Team All-State selection.
According to Bevilacqua, Hopgood was just as good of a player as she was a teammate.
“She was coachable, wanted to learn new things and wanted to get better,” Bevilacqua said. “She’ll be tough to replace. I think we have some good underclassmen ready to come in, but the toughest thing will be the leadership role that she had on the court.”
