Advent mission of Woodridge Church to collect diapers for foster children

As an Advent mission project, Reverend Scott Spencer of Woodridge UCC in Cranston has announced the church will be collecting diapers for foster care children.

He said, “Families who provide temporary or long-term homes for foster children often struggle to meet the cost of providing diapers. Our collection will help those families to continue to provide for these vulnerable and needy children. “

The Advent mission kick-off will be held on Nov. 30 and run through Jan. 6. As one collection site, the church will use the crèche on the front lawn outside the sanctuary. Diapers can be dropped off on Monday through Friday at the church office, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or on Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon.

It is Reverend Spencer’s hope that “this will remind us of the connection between Jesus’ birth and the birth of all children.” In many ways, foster care children have a vulnerable beginning to their life. And so did Jesus, as his parents had to seek alternative lodging because there was “no room in the inn.”

According to Heather Ashworth, Director of Education for Woodridge Church, a foster mom and co-chair of the Foster Parent Advisory Council, “Children are placed in state care when there is a tragedy in the family or if there is suspected abuse or neglect. The children placed in care are there because they did not have family that was available or appropriate to care for the child. I became a foster parent simply because I wanted to help and love children.”

Children’s Friend and Service help foster care children mainly from birth to six years old. Many of the children are still in diapers, which cost $72 per month. Foster Parents are given a stipend of $14.31 per day, which barely covers basic needs.

Woodridge United Church of Christ is located at 546 Budlong Road, Cranston. Weekly services are held every Sunday at 10 a.m.
