Ocean State Theatre Company’s producing artistic director, Amiee Turner, who made her Ocean State Theatre debut as the lone female writer, Carol Wyman, in last season’s production of the Neil Simon comedy “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” and audience favorite Christopher Swan, who received rave reviews for his portrayal as the King in OSTC’s inaugural production of “The King and I,” will be starring opposite one another as Rose and Herbie in OSTC’s upcoming summer production of the Tony Award-winning classic American musical, “Gypsy.”

“The role of Mama Rose is a gift to any actress, and I’m really looking forward to exploring the character,” said Turner. “She was such a driven person, to whom I can certainly relate, and a passionate mother, which makes her all the more complex. I know it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but I’m excited about the journey. And I’m thrilled that Chris Swan, one of my favorite actors and good friend, will be taking the journey with me.”

Amiee Turner has had a long and eclectic career spanning three decades. While still a teenager, she had already toured the U.S. as Kristine in “A Chorus Line” and Cassandra in “CATS.” She quickly established herself in NYC, making her Broadway debut as Phyllis in “42nd Street” at 19. Her additional Broadway credits include “The Will Rogers Follies,” “My Favorite Year,” “The Goodbye Girl,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and Dame Edna: The Royal Tour.

Although Rhode Island primarily knows her as a director and producer, her extensive acting career includes Pal Joey at the Huntington, Ankles Aweigh at Goodspeed Opera House, and three productions at Westchester Broadway Theatre. Additionally, she founded A.I.S.O.P. Theatre Co. in New York City, co-produced and starred in the independent film “Sunday on the Rocks” alongside Tony Award-winners Cady Huffman and Julie White and directed by Emmy Award winner Joe Morton, and several television appearances including “Law & Order.”

Christopher Swan was last seen at Ocean State Theatre as Professor Callahan in “Legally Blonde” (2013). Other OSTC credits include “Race,” and the OSTC at Theatre By The Sea productions of “A Funny Thing…Forum” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” Recent credits include Nathan Detroit in the 2014-15 National Tour of “Guys and Dolls,” Professor Callahan in the original cast of “Legally Blonde” on the NCL Getaway, and National Tours of both “Damn Yankees” and “A Christmas Story.” A graduate of the Boston Conservatory, Christopher’s area credits include “Three Sisters at American Globe,” “Gifts of the Magi” at New Rep and “Romeo and Juliet” at The Publick in Boston. Other regional credits include “Forever Plaid” (TBPAC), “Little Shop of Horrors” (American Stage), “Angels in America” (Arkansas Rep) and “Clybourne Park” (Hippodrome Theatre).

“Gypsy” will be presented at Ocean State Theatre from July 8 through Aug. 2. Previews are scheduled for Wednesday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, July 9 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. All other performances will be held Tuesday (except July 14 and 28), Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Saturdays (except July 11 and 24) and Sundays at 2 p.m. Conducting Conversations Live!, a free post-show discussion, will follow the 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, July 12.

The theatre is located at 1245 Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick. Tickets are $39 for preview performances and $39 to $54 for all other performances. Discount rates for groups of 20 or more are available by calling 921-1777 x112. $30 “Rush” tickets are available on a limited basis one hour prior to curtain on the day of the performance.
