Apponaug 9’s lose to CLCF, still one game away from state championship

Posted

The Apponaug 9-year-old all-star team put itself within one win of a Cal Ripken state championship in the tournament it’s hosting, but couldn’t close it out on Tuesday in a 17-6 loss to Cranston’s CLCF.

The defeat means that Apponaug and CLCF had to play a winner-take-all championship game, which was scheduled for Wednesday, with the results unavailable at press time.

The winner of that game will move on to the Eastern Regional tournament, to be played in New Hampshire.

The 9-year-old team members are Andrew Wheeler, Christopher Scalzo, Joey Labelle, Shane Sweeney, Dylan Roberts, Matthew Badway, Matthew Jarmie, Devin Beaulieu, Christopher Pires, Dean Paley, Jaden Wilkins, Chase Roberts and Brady Maccarone. The team is managed by John Wheeler with coaches Mark Paley and Gary Maccarone.

11’s bow out

The Apponaug 11-year-old all-star team lost the first game of its state tournament to Washington Park over the weekend, but battled back to defeat West Warwick in extra innings on Monday 15-7.

That set up a re-match with Washington Park on Tuesday for the championship, and Apponaug was defeated 10-0. Team members are Sean Dunphy, James Madden, Aiden Sullivan, Dylan Barlow, Chase Schulte, Austin Noon, Jake Mullen, Aaron Clary, Andrew Whitehead, Brandon Roberts and John Gyra. The team is managed by Joe Dunphy, with coaches Andy Sullivan and Jack Madden.
