Apponaug Girls Softball League holds final games at Winslow Park

Posted

After 27 years, Apponaug Girls Softball played its last games at its beloved Winslow Park this past weekend in the 18U and 16U Eastern National Qualifier.

Many current and past coaches, board members, players and their families reflected on past games at the park, but also looked forward to playing their Fall Ball season at the new Winslow Park, located off Airport Road.

Due to T.F. Green Airport expansion, Apponaug lost its fields on Groveland Avenue in Warwick. The R.I. Airport Corporation has built a new complex for the league on the northeast side of the airport, including six softball fields, a snack bar/clubhouse and walking trails.

Many of the girls, following in the footsteps of their mothers, have played in the league from instructional all the way to the masters division. Winslow Park has become a second home to many of the players, who took pictures around the fields and in front of the park sign.

The Apponaug Pride Gold ‘97 went undefeated in the 18U Division. The team earned a berth in the Eastern Nationals for next year. Tears were shed as many of the girls played their last game with Apponaug Girls Softball as they start college in the fall.
