UPDATE: We're happy to report that, after seeing the story in Beacon, the Apponaug Girls Softball league received a call from someone who lives near old Winslow Park that took the sign for safekeeping after seeing construction crews, and stored it safely at their house.
Original story below.
The Apponaug Girls Softball team is making a move from the old Winslow Field off Groveland Avenue to their new Winslow Field home off of Airport Road and wanted to bring a piece of their past with them: their “Welcome to Winslow Park” sign. Now the sign is missing, and the team is looking for the community’s help retrieving it.
“We’re all absolutely thrilled about our new facility over on Airport Road,” said Linda Chevian, an Apponaug Girls Softball board member who has been with the league for more than 12 years. “A lot of us have been involved with the league a long time and we wanted to bring something of old Winslow to new Winslow and to have that sign brought with us.”
Sometime between the evening of August 9 and August 10, the sign, which was a gift from a longtime board member in 2006, was removed and its loss was noticed by several team members. With the T.F. Green Airport expansion prompting the relocation of the field and the demolition of the old facility, the team was making arrangements to move all of their equipment.
“We’re assuming someone took it thinking it was going to get demolished along with everything else,” said Chevian. “That sign was perfect for us.”
The league has checked with coaches, board members and demolition contractors to no avail. League members have spread the word by posting pictures of the sign on social media, and they’ve emailed all league members about the situation.
According to Chevian, the police have not been contacted and the league is asking for the sign’s return with no questions asked. If anyone has information, they’re asked to contact league president Bob Chevian at 487-9579 or by email at chevian3@gmail.com.
“We’re a non profit, and an additional expense for a new sign just takes the money away from the girls,” said Chevian. “The sign was beautiful, colorful and meant a lot to us.”
