Apponaug hosts 9-year-old state tourney, team moves into championship game

Apponaug is hosting the 9-year-old Cal Ripken State Tournament, and the hosts got their pursuit of a championship underway in style on Sunday. Playing perennial power CLCF, Apponaug won 6-5 in the winner’s bracket final to advance to the state championship game. Apponaug had a bye in the three-team tournament, while CLCF defeated West Warwick in the opening game. That set up Sunday’s showdown, and Apponaug put itself a win away from a title. It will play either West Warwick or CLCF today at 5:30 p.m. and will have to lose twice in order to be eliminated. If it were to lose today, a winner-take-all game would be played Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. (Warwick Beacon photos by Leo van Dijk / rhodyphoto.com)
