Area schools invited to apply for theater performance

@T_Basic:Deana’s Educational Theater (DET), a producer of educational theater programs on relationship violence, has received a $15,000 grant from the Honey Dew Family Foundation. The funds will be used for the Dew’n the Right Thing project in which any school in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island with a Honey Dew Donuts store in their community can apply for a free or discounted DET performance at one of their schools.

“Bullying and other forms of relationship violence are prevalent within schools across the country,” said DET Executive Director Christine Shaw. “Relationship violence prevention education has never been more important than it is today. This generous grant from the Honey Dew Family Foundation will allow schools to host our innovative performances for students of all ages in a cost-effective manner.” Qualifying communities and schools can visit www.deanaseducationaltheater.org for more information.

The grant comes at a timely junction as DET is launching the premiere of The Lesson, a play addressing cyber bullying issues for grades 8 through 12. Written by Clifford Odle and produced by DET, The Lesson explores the relationships of three students forced to deal with the effects of cyber bullying. DET met with local high school students and administrators to gather firsthand information about issues high school students face. The Lesson was made possible through funding from The Greater Lowell Community Foundation and The Roy A. Hunt Foundation.
