Arlington Elementary School ends month-long fundraiser on high note

Posted

People brought bags of clothes, books, toys, household items, and miscellaneous pieces to the first Arlington Elementary School Savers donation drive fundraiser.

Over the past five Saturdays in April, members of the Arlington PTG and Student Council stood diligently at the curbside waiting for cars to drive up with donations.

PTG president Mandie Porreca is thrilled with the outcome. “In total, we collected 3,648 pounds of clothes and 380 pounds of books,” she said.

Porreca had set a personal goal to raise $1,000 for the PTG. The total amount from Savers was $1,063. With an additional $78 from the bake sale table, she went well over her goal.

For the last Saturday, Porreca arranged for a DJ and face-painter to help bring more excitement to the event.

“BASICS was proud to support our friends at Arlington by supplying a face painter and DJ services for the event. Pete Kelleher [owner of BP Entertainment and BASICS program director] enjoyed spinning tunes for the event,” said Kerri Kelleher, president of BASICS.

Kelleher was very impressed with the efforts of the new PTG at Arlington.

“We were happy to be able to support them in this endeavor,” she said.

Porreca praised the community effort and support she received for the program.

“I feel like we were ‘The Little Engine that Could.’ Never underestimate the power of determination,” she said.
