QUIET MOMENT: Carly Fordham of West Greenwich and Aaron Holland of Exeter were driving the Apponaug rotary when they spotted the fishing pier. “It’s really pretty,” said Carly, who suggested they stop and enjoy the scene.

It was 2010 when the city celebrated the groundbreaking of the Ross Elkhay fishing pier and boardwalk at Gorton Pond in Apponaug. Today, it’s a spot frequented by people of all ages who love to fish or just spend time relaxing by the pond.

The boardwalk is named in memory of Suzanne and John Elkhay’s son, Ross, who died of cystic fibrosis at the age of 12.

The 100-foot long boardwalk ends in an 80-foot long T-shaped pier with a gazebo at either end. Funds for the project come from a 2006 DEM grant of $150,000 and approximately $10,000 from city coffers. Shortly after the original announcement of the grant, John Elkhay, Ross’ father, and members of the Ross Elkhay Foundation, approached the city with a donation of $190,000 toward the project.
