Author to give illustrated lecture on RI’s last execution

Author Paul F. Caranci will give an illustrated lecture on his recent book, The Hanging and Redemption of John Gordon: The True Story of Rhode Island’s Last Execution, May 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Saylesville Meeting House, 374 Great Road, Lincoln.

When Amasa Sprague, a wealthy Yankee mill owner, was murdered in 1843, a young Irish Catholic man named John Gordon was accused of the crime. Thanks in large part to a flawed trial and anti-Irish Catholic sentiment, Gordon became the last victim of capital punishment in Rhode Island. Recently discovered evidence has since proved him innocent.

Caranci vividly tells the story of the murder and exposes a corrupt judicial system, a biased newspaper, and a bigoted society responsible for the unjust death of an innocent man. Reception and book signing to follow at Historic New England’s Arnold House, 487 Great Road. The presentation is free to Historic New England members and $5 nonmembers.

Registration is recommended. Please call 728-9696 for more information or buy online.
