(Revealing look inside the music business)

“Begin Again” is a small, independent movie that explores the music business and the people who both control it and try to make a living as part of it.

Keira Knightley plays Gretta, a British woman who has been hurt by her musician lover (Adam Levine) and Dan, a drunken record company producer (Mark Ruffalo) who is broke after being fired. They meet in a bar after she has just sung one of her songs. He wants to make her a star. They make music with a pick-up group of musicians on the streets of New York. There’s a subplot involving Dan’s separation from his wife and daughter.

The movie gets inside the belly of the current conflicts of music being free for everyone, while record companies work to exploit young up-and-coming musicians. It’s a nice little “relationship” movie, along the lines of “Once,” for those interested.

There is some good music in the background. While Levine plays the “bad guy,” he does make some great music.

Rated R, mainly for profanity.
