Hawks can’t slow Quakers’ offense in D-I semis

An 11-0 Moses Brown run, which spanned from the beginning of the second quarter to midway through the fourth quarter, helped the third-seeded Quakers down No. 2 Hendricken in the Division I boys’ lacrosse semifinals, 17-9, on Thursday night at Brown University.

A goal by Hendricken junior attack Kyle Negren tied the score at 5 just 17 seconds into the second quarter, before Moses Brown completely took control.

“I thought it took a lot to get to 5-5,” Hendricken head coach Kevin Murray said. “We got in that early hole and it took a lot of effort to get out of that. They have good players, they play hard and they executed better than we did tonight.”

Britton DeFeo, who scored a game-high eight goals, got things started for Moses Brown, capitalizing shortly after a Hendricken turnover to make it 1-0.

Moses Brown’s strong start didn’t stop there, as Garrett Hanson made it 2-0 less than a minute later.

Back-to-back goals from Anthony D’Arcangelo quickly ballooned the lead to 4-0, triggering Murray to call a timeout.

After the timeout, the Hawks looked like a different team, stringing together a 4-0 run of their own on goals from Wyatt Alberigo, Reilly Miller, Joe Sousa and Dylan McSparren.

An answer from Max Martirano at 11:21 of the first quarter ended that run, though, giving Moses Brown the 5-4 edge after one frame.

Negren tallied his only goal of the game shortly after play resumed in the second quarter to tie the game at 5, but Hendricken saw the game slowly slip away from there.

DeFeo and Clifford Blanchard each scored twice in the second quarter and Martirano added his second of the game to give the Quakers a 10-5 halftime lead.

Hendricken couldn’t find its scoring touch in the third quarter, either.

As a result, Moses Brown was able to tack four goals onto its lead.

DeFeo scored three times and Blanchard added his third goal for a hat trick to give the Quakers a 14-5 cushion at the end of three quarters.

With the game already decided, Hendricken added four goals late, with Sousa scoring twice and Miller and Alberigo each scoring once in the fourth quarter.

DeFeo scored twice more in the final frame and Hanson tallied one to bring the score to a 17-9 final.

The defensive meltdown was uncharacteristic of Hendricken, which had a great deal of success on the defensive end this spring.

“They put a lot of goals up against us when we haven’t given up a lot of goals to anyone other than La Salle this year,” Murray said. “I give them credit.”

Moses Brown clinched a berth in the title game with the win. It was set to play undefeated La Salle for the state championship on Monday, but results were unavailable at press time.
