The Bishop Hendricken and Pilgrim baseball teams led the way in Warwick this past week as the season officially got underway.

The Hawks opened up with a 6-0 victory on Friday over Lincoln, as junior pitcher Mike McCaffrey threw five shutout innings and the offense racked up seven hits. Sophomore Matt Kennedy pitched the final inning.

Pilgrim got its season off to a strong start as well, taking down Coventry 4-2 in nine innings on Friday. Elijah Dressell got the start and pitched three innings for the Pats before Mike Broccoli came in and struck out seven batters over the final six innings to finish the job. Broccoli also had three hits to lead the offense.

Toll Gate’s first game didn’t go quite as well. The Titans lost 8-1 to Moses Brown on Friday. James Meizoso and Manny Bjorklund split the pitching duties for Toll Gate, which surrendered 3 runs in the third and two apiece in the fourth and fifth innings.

Warwick Vets is the only city team to have played two games so far, and it has a .500 record to show for it. Behind a strong start from senior captain Dan Greaves, Vets beat Mt. Pleasant 13-0 last Monday in a mercy-rule shortened game. On Friday, East Providence got the best of the ’Canes 9-7.

Vets led 7-5 entering the sixth inning, but the Townies tied the score with two in the sixth and then took the lead for good with two more in the seventh. Austin Lamaire, Chris Simmons and Jesse Holland shared the pitching duties for the ’Canes.

All four teams will be back in action this week, as Hendricken plays at Cranston West on Tuesday, Toll Gate is at Middletown on the same day and Pilgrim is at Portsmouth. On Wednesday, Vets is at Hope.

On Thursday, Pilgrim will host Barrington, Toll Gate hosts East Greenwich and Hendricken travels to Cumberland. On Friday, Vets travels to Central.

Pilgrim hosts Lincoln on Saturday, while Toll Gate and Vets get together for a non-league showdown.
