Hawks down Quakers in Injury Fund matchup

The Bishop Hendricken football team dominated on both sides of the ball in a 19-0 victory in an abbreviated Injury Fund game against defending Division II champion Moses Brown on Friday night.

In the middle game of a tripleheader at Cranston Stadium, the Hawks’ offense was clicking on all cylinders from the get-go in the two-quarter matchup.

Hendricken received the ball to start and, on the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Chris Hindle fired a ball down the left sideline to Andrew Flint, who created separation and hauled in the pass with ease, going out of bounds near the Quakers’ 30-yard line.

On the next play, senior running back Matt DiTondo darted through the Moses Brown defense for a touchdown. The extra point by Ryan Blais put the Hawks up 7-0 just 23 seconds into the game.

After some solid defensive play from both teams, Hendricken was able to march down the field near the end of the first quarter to increase its lead.

With under two minutes to go in the opening quarter, Hindle launched a strike to Andrew Hopgood right down the middle of the field for an easy 26-yard touchdown to push the lead to 13-0.

In the second quarter, Kwity Paye made his presence felt.

Early in that second frame, Jaden Pena intercepted a pass from Hindle and was tackled at Hendricken’s 40-yard line.

However, Paye pounced on a loose ball for a fumble recovery just north of a minute later.

And, on the ensuing possession, Paye ripped off consecutive runs out of the backfield of 50 and 10 yards, with the latter finding pay dirt to give the Hawks a 19-0 lead.

Moses Brown’s last-ditch effort to move the ball down the field was answered by Hendricken’s defense. Ultimately, the Hawks got the ball back and ran down the clock to preserve the victory.

The Hawks will host Notre Dame from West Haven, Connecticut, for a non-league matchup on Friday at 7 p.m.

They will then open up league play against East Providence at 7 p.m. next Friday at Pierce Memorial Stadium.
