Bishop Hendricken lacrosse head coach Kevin Murray hasn’t seen many players like Reilly Miller in the past few years.
Miller was named an All-American in lacrosse after leading the way for Hendricken. He potted 30 goals and added 26 assists to pace the Hawks’ scoring attack. The balance Miller brought to the offense helped his team to a 9-3 record and No. 2 seed in the Division I playoffs.
“He’s kinda got the old school two-way lacrosse game going,” Murray said. “A lot of guys now are kind of assists or goals, but he’s got that balanced game while also playing tough defense. He has really always been a mature kid, but he really matured as one of the captains, a lot of leadership both on and off the field.”
The All-American leads by example on the field, helping to improve the play of Hendricken’s younger core as the next wave looks to bring a championship back to Warwick. The toughness he exhibited on the turf served as an inspiration to those playing swing or getting ready to come in on the sidelines.
“It’ll be tough but a kid like him, he’s one of those very rare kids that I’ve had that plays most of the game, never looking to come off,” Murray said about how difficult it will be to replace a player of Miller’s caliber. “We’ve had some guys [be All-Americans], but we haven’t had a guy in the last few years. It’s not a given, you have to earn it in our league, lots of good players vying for those spots.”
As for his lacrosse future, Miller will walk on at Quinnipiac as he seeks a spot on its roster. Anything is possible, though, for a two-sport athlete who was All-State in both.
“It’s a tough thing to do,” Murray said of that accomplishment. “We’ve been lucky enough to do well and we’ve had some guys, but he’s right up there. Colin Briggs was MVP at Virginia in 2011 in the national championship game but Reilly is a tough kid who gave every minute of the day and those guys are hard to come by for sure.”
