Leite served as an anchor and a leader at midfield for Hendricken (8-2-4) this season, and being the sole Warwick boys’ soccer player to be First Team All-State reflects that.
His ability to take pressure off of an inexperienced back line and goaltender helped propel the Hawks to a semifinals appearance, where they fell 2-1 to eventual D-I champion North Kingstown.
“Because of his ability to understand tactics he was able to alleviate a lot of pressure getting to the back 4 and he was able to cover a lot of positions if the group needed,” Hendricken boys’ soccer head coach Mike Rooney said. “If any of the back line needed help, he would go across and apply pressure.”
His skill was impressive, but his tendency to be a quasi-coach on the field was equally as helpful to his teammates. Rooney said that Leite’s previous experience playing hockey opened him up to the idea of everyone on a team having a role.
Leite would work to show them how to correct their miscues, using knowledge from his seasons of growth and development to make his teammates better.
“Obviously the experience that he’s had over the years, that’s the first thing,” Rooney said when asked what makes Leite such an effective leader. “Seeing people make some mistakes and knowing how to cover it, he would encourage them and tell them this is what we need to do in this situation.”
