Athlete of the Year - Anthony Witherstone, Hendricken

Bishop Hendricken junior Anthony Witherstone is this year’s Beacon Boys’ Volleyball Player of the Year.

Thanks in large part to the play of Witherstone, the Hawks compiled a respectable record of 9-6, good for third in Division I-North behind powerhouses La Salle and Mount Saint Charles.

According to Hendricken head coach Michael Harrington, Witherstone stepped up tremendously for his team this spring.

“He came with his best defensive play and passing ability, and he developed into a mentally tough outside hitter,” Harrington said.

Witherstone wasn’t a vocal leader for the team, but rather led by example through his play. In that sense, Witherstone was certainly someone that his teammates looked to when it came to setting the tone for a match.

“He was a quiet leader,” Harrington said. “He never turned away from the big moments.”

Luckily for Harrington and Hendricken returners, Witherstone will be back in green and gold come next spring. The football star will bring his tremendous athleticism to the court one more time for the Hawks.

“It’s awesome,” Harrington said of having Witherstone back for another season. “He played at a great level this year, so I’m hoping that he’ll grow off that. It’s great for us.”
