Boys and Girls Clubs summer camp not just about fun, but learning, too

Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick have multiple programs and activities planned for this summer designed to keep kids not only entertained, but educated as well.

Two programs being offered this summer are Summer Day Camp, and BLAST (Bringing Learning and Service Together).

BLAST is a six-week summer learning program funded by the Hasbro summer learning initiative. It is designed for incoming fourth, fifth and sixth graders. Karin Kavanagh, associate director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick, said the curriculum for BLAST is designed to stem the learning loss that occurs during the summer. Students lose between two to three months worth of learning over the summer, so this program is meant to mitigate that. The program includes pre- and post-testing.

“Last year our kids had an increase of 15.54 percent in literacy and they went up in math 276 percent,” Kavanagh said.

This is the second year the Boys & Girls Clubs has held the BLAST program. Currently 30 students are enrolled. The program involves hands-on experiences, field trips, recreation and exciting learning opportunities to keep kids on track for the next year. BLAST runs from July 6 to Aug. 14, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is $30 a week. Extended care is also available for an additional $10 a week.

Summer Day Camp runs from June 29 until the beginning of school, Aug. 28 with an enrollment of about 120 kids daily. The program is held at the Masonic Youth Center in Buttonwoods and features swimming, sports and games, crafts, nature activities and more. The cost is $125 a week with a $10 non-refundable deposit per camper, per session.

“There are programs where they will learn about the bay, it’s very interactive and hands-on. They have yoga classes, they have something for everyone; it is a true outdoor camp … It’s a beautiful place to spend the summer,” Kavanagh said.

Summer Day Camp takes place on 74 acres of woods and fields on the bay. The staff is CPR trained and certified and there is a 1 to 13 ratio between staff and kids. Free lunch is provided every day in the Summer Day Camp program and the BLAST program. BLAST program offers free breakfast as well.

“It’s a great affordable option for the parents that is also a super learning experience and fun time for the kids as well,” Boys & Girls Club of Warwick Development Director Eleanor Acton said.

Partnered with the Warwick Youth Center, the program also offers a job readiness program.

“We take kids from ages 14 to 18 and we develop job skills,” said Lara D’Antuono, executive director of the Warwick Boys & Girls Club.

Boys & Girls Clubs will also run a pilot program with the city for summer camp this summer, with details being disclosed this week.

Membership for the Boys & Girls Club is $30 a year with additional costs for whichever summer programs kids enroll in. Scholarships for underprivileged children to assist in the payment of camp are available every year, though this year all scholarships have been taken. Parents looking to receive assistance for next year’s summer camp should apply early in the year for scholarships. To register for BLAST or for Summer Day Camp, visit www.wbgclubs.org.
