Bridge to be dedicated to Raymond Durfee

A dedication ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 to rename the Pocasset River Bridge to the Honorable Raymond M. Durfee Bridge. The ceremony will take place at 1140 Reservoir Avenue, which is next to the bridge. The public and members of the media are invited to attend.  Senator Hanna Gallo and Representative Robert Jacquard have invited all of the state’s general officers to attend.

“Raymond Durfee was a true American hero who served the community of Cranston his entire life. Whether it was being a lieutenant on the ship that landed the Marines on Iwo Jima or becoming the first naval officer in New England to be called back to service during the Korean conflict, Raymond Durfee always answered the call to help his community and country.  This is a fitting honor for him,” said Jacquard (D-Dist. 17, Cranston).

“Raymond served his beloved city at the State House for 15 years as well as through his long-running family hardware store that saw Raymond behind the counter until his 87th year,” said Gallo. He died at 88.

Raymond M. Durfee was born in the city of Cranston in 1922.  He attended Cranston High School (1940) and Brown University (1944), after which he enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1946. Raymond Durfee also served with distinction in the Rhode Island State House, first as a Representative from Cranston from 1963 through 1970. He was then elected to the state Senate in 1970, serving through 1978.
