Brown University presents 'Kiss of Spider-woman'

Brown University’s Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies and Sock & Buskin proudly present “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” the 1993 recipient of the Tony Award for Best Musical written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, with a book by Terrence McNally. Based on the novel "El Beso de la Mujer Arana," written by Manuel Puig, the play explores themes of gender, homosexuality, torture, human rights and fantasy. The two central characters, Molina and Valentin, struggle to survive the harsh and dismal Brazilian prison in which they are entrapped. Both end up finding solace in their friendship and the fantastical world of classical movies starring Molina’s favorite starlet, an actress named Aurora.

Conceived as a musical within a movie, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” offers the audience multiple versions of reality. The production seamlessly flows from the drab existence of prison life to the glamorous world of Hollywood Technicolor. Juxtaposed, these two environments deepen the love story that sits at the heart of this celebrated story from one of the most celebrated composer-librettist teams in theater history.

Accompanied by a nine-instrument band, the musical is replete with song, dance and humor as well as tragedy. The Spider Woman, as much glamorous as dangerous, slowly weaves her treacherous web, as the men grow closer to each other and retreat ever further from reality.

Joined by the talented Spanish musical director Adria Barbosa, director Marcus Gardley brings a fresh take to this modern classic. Having been a book, a play and a musical, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is a rich text from which Gardley is able to entertain and challenge the audience. Don’t miss your chance to take part in this thrilling experience. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $7 for students. Group rates are available. Contact 863-2838 or boxoffice@brown.edu.
