Senior Melanie Brunelle led the Pilgrim girls’ outdoor track team to a sixth-place finish at the RIIL Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Brown Stadium on Saturday.

Brunelle claimed state titles in the high jump and triple jump to close out her high school career with a bang.

Brunelle won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches and also recorded a winning distance of 36 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump.

The senior also earned points in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, placing fourth.

Brunelle certainly led the charge for Pilgrim, but several individuals contributed to the team’s sixth-place finish.

Pilgrim junior Kayda Phillip earned second in the long jump, getting edged out by only Stephanie Mattson of Smithfield.

Madison Stanley also placed fifth in the triple jump, while Pilgrim’s 4x100 relay team came in fifth for the meet.

The Pats compiled 36 points on the day. Smithfield was somewhat of a surprise winner for the girls, registering 83 points to edge Hope and La Salle.

Hawks earn fifth

The Bishop Hendricken track team didn’t have an individual state champion, but the team did enough to earn fifth place with a point total of 39.5

Chris Storti earned third in the shot put, while Shane Olson placed third in the javelin throw, Ben Murphy second in the high jump, Kwity Paye sixth in the long jump, Jon Celico fifth in the pole vault, Nick Celico fifth and Dom Parlato sixth in the 3000 and Robert Merlino fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles.

The Hawks’ relay teams also shined.

Hendricken’s 4x800 relay placed third, its 4x100 earned fourth and its 4x400 finished in fifth.

Gannon, Jacobsen stand out for Titans

The Toll Gate girls’ track team finished in 10th on Saturday, tying with Portsmouth, as each team compiled 20 points.

The Titans earned a trio of third-place finishes on the day, with sophomore Casey Gannon placing third in the high jump and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, while junior Courtney Jacobsen finished third in the hammer throw.

Sophomore Ani Armenakyan was the only other Titan to place, as she earned fifth in the shot put.

Other notes

The Pilgrim boys’ outdoor track team also received four top-six finishes, highlighted by Jacob Yang, who earned the state title in the discus throw.

Yang also earned fifth in the hammer throw.

Pilgrim junior Austin Asoroona placed in two events as well. Asoroona, Pilgrim’s top sprinter, earned fourth in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Warwick Vets’ Arianna Pafume was the only one from her team to place, earning third in the javelin throw.
