Tri-City Elks

Pig roast with all the fixings Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and need to be purchased in advance. There will be no tickets sold at the door.

Car Ssow continues every Thursday evening at 5 p.m. in the back of the Lodge near the Tiki Bar. Come show off your car. There is a wall plaque awarded to the owner of the most popular vehicle of the evening. Music is provided for your enjoyment by Bob Caramante. Have a cold beverage at the Tiki Bar, listen to the music, and have something good to eat from the grill.

Country line dancing will resume Sept. 12 from 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $6 per person. Paul is the instructor, and proceeds will benefit the Elks charities.

Zumba lessons will resume Sept. 6 from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $6 per person, and the instructor is Lorraine Blanchard. Come burn off some calories while having fun doing it.

Warwick Historical Society Events

Sept. 7 from 7-8 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library, the Warwick Historical Society, Friends of Warwick Ponds and Henry Brown have worked together to bring you a talk on Warwick Pond Neighborhoods. Come listen to the stories and the history of Warwick Pond neighborhoods, which include Chatham Village, Hoxsie, Lake Shore Drive, Spring Green and the airport. Henry Brown, the Warwick historian, will be speaking about these villages from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Historic photos and maps will be on display at the library.

The Warwick Historical Society has, over the years, acquired archival collections, which provide primary source materials for those interested in researching or writing about the history of the city. The Warwick Historical Society is open to the public weekly from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays and the second Saturday of the month.

Trout Unlimited Meeting

The Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU225) will host its monthly membership meeting August 31 starting at 5 p.m. at the Deer Check Station on Rte. 165 (Ten Rod Road) in Exeter. This will be the last of four streamside meetings for summer 2016. The primary focus of this meeting will be fly tying for the fall hatches, primarily a variety of terrestrials. For those interested in tying with experts, bring your tools. For those who would like to learn the basics of fly tying, there will be a beginners tying table with tools and materials. Networking will start at 5 p.m., food will be available at about 5:30 p.m. for members and guests, and a short meeting will start around 6 before the fly tying starts. This meeting will allow members and guests to network, tell fishing and fly tying tales and other stories of interest, and discuss plans for spending time outdoors as summer blends into fall. Although the days are getting shorter, there will still be enough sunshine to allow antsy anglers and hungry fish to meet in the water. Gaspee Seniors

Greenwood Choir Concert

Looking for a fun activity to try this fall? Join the Greenwood Concert Choir. Singers of all voice parts for the fall 2016 season are being sought, especially tenors and basses. Host Families Needed

Consider hosting an international exchange student through AFSUSA. Each year, more than 2,300 students from 90 countries come to the U.S. to study in our high schools and live with host families. By hosting an AFS exchange student, you will begin to see the world differently. Chorus of Kent County

The Chorus of Kent County, directed by Nicholas Laroche, invites you to join them beginning Sept. 8 as rehearsals begin for the Christmas season. Rehearsals are held at 7 p.m. in the Chorus Room at West Warwick High School. They will be there at 6:30 p.m. to welcome you and provide you with your music for the season. Dues are $25 per season. All are welcome, however, they are especially seeking to enhance the tenor and bass sections. Ocean State Orchid Society

The Ocean State Orchid Society will hold their next meeting Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. at La Quinta Inn and Suites Coventry, 4 Universal Boulevard. Coventry Jim Marlow, orchid grower and owner of Marlow's Orchids in Scottsville, New York, will present “My Favorite Orchids.” Marlow's Orchids is one of just a few commercial greenhouses in New York State that are open to the public. On his website, Jim describes himself as a “collections grower, growing and sourcing unique specimens for both the beginner and most seasoned orchid collectors.” Jim will bring plants for sale. There will be a Grow and Show table. The public is welcome.

St. Benedict Annual Fall Flea Market

St Benedict Church, 70 Transit Street, Warwick, is having its annual Fall Flea Market (indoor, rain or shine) Sept. 10 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sept. 11 from 8 a.m.-12 noon. Save the Bay Coastal Cleanup

Save The Bay is recruiting volunteers to serve as site leaders for its 2016 International Coastal Cleanup. In particular, the organization is looking for site leaders who can help identify and lead cleanups at small neighborhood beaches, fishing areas, boat launches and rights of way. The official date of the International Coastal Cleanup is Sept. 17, but cleanups held anytime during September or October can be counted as part of the global event. Save The Bay will hold site leader training Aug. 23 from 5:30-7 p.m. To become a site leader, contact Lewis at jlewis@savebay.org.

Warwick Figure Skaters

Warwick Figure Skaters will hold open registration for their fall-winter programs Sept. 24 from 12-2 p.m. at Thayer Arena, 975 Sandy Lane, Warwick. All in a Chord

All in a Chord (AIAC), the barbershop chorus of women from all over Rhode Island, is seeking to recruit women 18 years old and older who love to sing. Unlike some choruses, AIAC does not do competition, or buy expensive costumes. There are low monthly dues to meet expenses. AIAC is a friendly group of 25 women that loves to sing and entertain. AIAC sings at social events, senior centers, libraries, birthday parties, PawSox games, etc. Members do not need to know how to read music, but only be able to carry a tune on key. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The groups are confidential and free of charge. For more information call Jessica at 738-1700.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child's development and offers information about community resources.
