Tri-City Elks

Country line dancing every Monday is suspended until further notice.

St. Patty’s Night March 14 at 7 p.m. Corned beef dinner and a performance from the DAMSHA Irish Step Dance Studio. Tickets are $15 and are available in the Lounge Monday through Thursday at 3 p.m. and Friday through Sunday at 12 noon.

Apponaug Girls 16U

Apponaug Girls 16U-Black Travel team will be holding a comedy fundraiser with Funny 4 Funds March 13 at the Warwick Knights of Columbus, 475 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Tickets are $20. Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting March 17 from 7-9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Legal Barriers to Employment

Wildlife Baby Shower

The Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of RI is holding their annual Wildlife Baby Shower March 21 from 1-4 p.m. at Cold Spring Community Center, 36 Beach Street, North Kingstown. Dog-rescue Fundraiser at Cowesett Inn

The Brandi Project is a new, socially conscious business devoted to saving shelter dogs that has already raised over $24k for the dog-rescue mission. The business takes its name from Brandi, a shelter dog rescued with just hours to spare before she was to be euthanized by a shelter. TBD will officially launch with a “Black Leash Affair” fundraiser March 22 at the Cowesett Inn from 4-7 p.m. with cocktail hour, dinner, raffle and more. Men’s Senior Softball

Registration is now underway for men 57 and older to join the Warwick Senior Softball League. It is a recreational league whose priorities are fun, safety and friendly competition. You do not have to be a Warwick resident to join. All games (double headers) begin at 9 a.m. and are played at Buttonwoods City Park in Warwick on Wednesday mornings. The fee is $20. Trout Unlimited Meeting

Parent University 101:

Steps to Success

On March 26 the Warwick Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse, in cooperation with Warwick Public Schools, is presenting an information night open to all parents of Warwick school children that focuses on student achievement. It’s entitled Parent University 101: Steps to Success. The event will be held at the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road. Sara Monaco, Ed.D. from the Warwick Public Schools’ Title 1 Family Center will offer 3½-hour presentations beginning at 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m. Topics will include how parents and schools can partner in children’s academic success, the importance of two way communication between parents and schools, and the link between mental wellness, consistent attendance and student success. Members of the Warwick Coalition to prevent Child Abuse and other area service providers will hold a community resource fair and will be on hand to answer parents’ questions about programs and services that support child wellness, safety, learning and academic success. Crafts will be offered for children while parents are listening to the presentation. This event is free of charge and made possible through a grant from the Washington/Kent Family Care Community Partnership and DCYF.

Comedy Fundraiser

A comedy fundraiser featuring New England’s best comedians to benefit the Children’s Recreation program at the J. MS Dream Center Bake Sale

MS Dream Center of R.I. will be holding their annual bake sale March 28 at the Warwick Mall Community Booth (near the entrance of JC Penny’s) from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Homemade baked goods, including holiday theme cupcakes, Italian cookie trays, pies, breads (also sugar free and gulten free items) will be avilable. Benefit Concert

The 13th Annual RI Community Food Bank Benefit Concert will be held Palm Sunday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Lakewood Baptist Church, 255 Atlantic Ave., Warwick. A celebration of Christian music with performances from multiple churches. Admission is at least one non-perishable food item. A free will offering for the food bank will also be taken. Refreshments will follow the concert.

Mary’s Way of the Cross

St. Benedict’s Young Adult Choir Keepin’ the faith will present Mary’s Way of the Cross, Stations with reflections and music, March 29 at 7 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Church. Conimicut Spring Fling Fundraiser

Tickets are now available for the Conimicut Village Association annual Spring Fling. Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
