Parent University 101

On March 26 the Warwick Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse, in cooperation with Warwick Public Schools, is presenting an information night open to all parents of Warwick school children that focuses on student achievement. It’s entitled Parent University 101: Steps to Success. The event will be held at the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road. Sara Monaco, Ed.D. from the Warwick Public Schools’ Title 1 Family Center will offer three half-hour presentations beginning at 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m. Topics will include how parents and schools can partner in children’s academic success, the importance of two way communication between parents and schools, and the link between mental wellness, consistent attendance and student success. Members of the Warwick Coalition to prevent Child Abuse and other area service providers will hold a community resource fair and will be on hand to answer parents’ questions about programs and services that support child wellness, safety, learning and academic success. Crafts will be offered for children while parents are listening to the presentation. This event is free of charge and made possible through a grant from the Washington/Kent Family Care Community Partnership and DCYF.

Terrorism in our Society

Seeking to learn more about terrorism in our society? Join this presentation, the second of a three-part lecture series entitled “Terrorism in Our Society.” Sponsored by the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Club of CCRI, guest speaker Brian Pires provides an intriguing presentation of how terrorism exists in our society. It will be presented March 26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in room 1040 at the CCRI Knight Campus located at 400 East Ave., Warwick. The presentation is free and open to the public. Comedy Fundraiser

A comedy fundraiser featuring New England’s best comedians to benefit the Children’s Recreation program at the J. MS Dream Center Bake Sale

MS Dream Center of R.I. will be holding their annual bake sale March 28 at the Warwick Mall Community Booth (near the entrance of JC Penny’s) from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Homemade baked goods, including holiday theme cupcakes, Italian cookie trays, pies, breads (also sugar free and gulten free items) will be avilable. Ham Raffle

Sgt. David Langevin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 449 will hold an Easter ham raffle March 28 at the post home, 197 Providence St., West Warwick. Trout Unlimited Annual Banquet

The Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU225) will host its 2015 Annual Banquet March 28 starting at 3 p.m. at the East Greenwich Veterans Fireman’s Hall, 80 Queen St., East Greenwich. The TU225 annual banquet represents the beginning of the upcoming season’s activities and projects and presents a key opportunity to network with members and friends of like passions while enjoying an excellent meal and winning prizes or super gifts for that special angler, loved ones and friends. Afternoon of Folk Music

Join Temple Am David, 40 Gardiner St., Warwick, March 29 from 2-4 p.m. for a pleasant afternoon of folk music with singer-songwriter Craig Sonnenfeld from Brookline, Mass. Born and raised a block from the Atlantic Ocean on the South Jersey shore, Craig Sonnenfeld grew up during the folk-boom of the ’60s and was influenced by such artists as Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Paxton, Eric Andersen, Linda Ronstadt and others. Many have described his original songs as sounding like traditional folk songs: some influenced by old classic country music, and some influenced by old rural blues stylings. Benefit Concert

The 13th Annual RI Community Food Bank Benefit Concert will be held Palm Sunday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Lakewood Baptist Church, 255 Atlantic Ave., Warwick. A celebration of Christian music with performances from multiple churches. Admission is at least one non-perishable food item. A free will offering for the food bank will also be taken. Refreshments will follow the concert.

Mary’s Way of the Cross

St. Benedict’s Young Adult Choir Keepin’ the faith will present Mary’s Way of the Cross, Stations with reflections and music, March 29 at 7 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Church. You are invited to enter into an intimate journey of faith through the sorrowful heart of Mary and surrender to God’s will just as she did. A canned food item for the food pantry would be appreciated.

Mad Poets Cafe: A Night of spoken word

Mad Poets Cafe: A night of spoken word will be held April 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road with former Poets Laureate Tom Chandler and Lisa Starr and current RI Poet Laureate Rick Benjamin for an afternoon with “The Three Amigos.” The event is part of a year-round tour by the poets who’ve been performing monthly in different locations around the state. Inspiring and uplifting, playful and profound, Tom, Lisa and Rick will remind you why for thousands of years people have turned to poetry when their hearts are broken, or overjoyed, or both. World War II Memoir

Col. Ron Barnes of the Pawtuxet Rangers will relate the special story of an airman family member in Germany during World War II. Sponsored by the Warwick Historical Society on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library.

Residents living in and around Cranston can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic, serious conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening. Easter/Spring Bazaar

The Pet Refuge is holding an Easter bazaar April 4 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Cold Spring Community Center, Beach Street, Wickford. There will be lots of great Easter items. easter baskets. gift items, white elephants, baked goods, Easter plants and much more. A silent auction with lots of great items will be held. Easter Vigil

On Saturday, April 4 a kinder Easter vigil will be held at 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 139 Ocean Ave., Cranston. Crafted to be child-friendly allowing kids to be kids, the service with music will last about 40 minutes and will inspire both the young and the old. An Easter egg hunt will round out the day.

Conimicut Easter Egg Hunt

The Riverview Improvement Association and the Conimicut Village Association are hosting an Easter egg hunt (complete with the Easter Bunny) April 4 at Conimicut Point Park. All children ages 10 and under are welcome to attend. The hunt starts at 11 a.m. sharp.

Oakland Beach Easter Egg Hunt

On April 4 the Oakland Beach Association and the Tri-City Elks #14 will co-sponsor the annual Easter egg hunt located behind the Oakland Beach Elementary School at noon. This is for children who are ages 9 and under, and they will get to meet the Easter Bunny and Warwick Police Department cadets. Come enjoy this annual event and come early to purchase some of the raffles that will be given away. Also, there are two very special eggs will be hidden; find one of these eggs and you could win a bike.

Italian Dinner

Lazicki’s Bird House and Rescue is holding its second annual Italian dinner April 4 at 6 p.m., Warwick Firefighters’ Association, 750 Warwick Ave. Choice of spaghetti and meatballs or eggplant parm. Conimicut Spring Fling Fundraiser

Tickets are now available for the Conimicut Village Association annual Spring Fling. The event is scheduled for April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Parish Hall. Tickets are $24 and include dinner, dessert, music, silent auctions, raffles and door prizes. All funds pay for the flowers and flags that line West Shore Road in Conimicut Village from May through September. Youth Roller Hockey Programs

April Art Camp

A new schedule of art sessions for April vacation was announced by Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Road. Returning favorites include drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics and more. The camp runs April 20-24 with morning and afternoon sessions for kids ages 6-12. Cost per three-hour session is $35 and there is a discount if you sign up for the whole week. Tri-City Elks Fishing Derby

Tri -City Elks will be holding their 6th annual fishing derby for boys and girls ages 5-12 on April 25 at 7 a.m. You will need to stop in at the lodge at 1915 West Shore Road after 3 p.m. to sign you children up. A fishing pole will be awarded to the child who catches the largest fish in each age group. Age groups are 5-8 and 9-12 years old. Please bring your own pole and bait. They will have volunteers here to help with all. Final weigh-in will be at 11 a.m. Hot dogs, chips and soda will follow.

Meadowbrook Terrace holds bingo every Friday at 6:45 p.m. with a great group of people. All are welcome.

A Gathering of God

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave, is having A Gathering With God, to be held on Wednesday evenings at 7 in the sanctuary. You are cordially invited to come and spend 45 minutes together and take with you a greater understanding of the Bible and inner peace that comes with an even closer relationship with God.

Bingo Caller Needed

Art Classes for Teens

Classes run for three-week intervals and there is a new medium every month like portraits in pencil, mixed media, ceramics, printmaking and more. Class sizes are small, so a lot of one-on-one instruction is guaranteed. Want to learn something new or play a game you’ve been playing for years? Come by the Pilgrim Senior Center every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a game of chess. Their chess group is looking for new people to join their group, and they are willing to teach new players how to play as well.

Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. The Fife & Drum Corps meets every Wednesday night at Wyman Elementary School from 6:30-8 p.m. The corps is open to anyone over the age of 12. Drum and fife instruction is available to beginners.

Free Pet Food

Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Grief Support

Evening Counseling Available

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center’s new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders Program hours are 4:40-8 p.m., making it accessible for people who work. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The groups are confidential and free of charge. For more information call Jessica at 738-1700. 

Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. For more information, or to arrange a clinic appointment for your preschool aged child, call the VOWS office at 734-3230.
