Pilgrim Senior Center

It’s Prom Season at The Pilgrim Senior Center:

“Puttin’ on the Ritz” Senior Prom, an evening of entertainment and fun.  The West Shore Health Center and Riverview Healthcare will be sponsoring the dance June 18 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Pilgrim Senior Center. This is one event that you will not want to miss. There will be entertainment by the Centracchio Quintet, a cold buffet and a variety of hot hors d’oeuvres, drinks, photos, dancing and a lot of fun. So put on your best dress or suit and come out and enjoy a nice evening with friends. Pick up your ticket at the welcome desk so they have enough food and drinks for everyone. Tickets will be available until June 12.

Breakfast with Books: Find out about new books while enjoying pastries and coffee at Breakfast with Books. Join librarians from the Warwick Public Library at the Pilgrim Senior Center as they review the best books of past years and give a sneak peek at upcoming titles June 16 at 10 a.m. Sign-up at the welcome desk at the Pilgrim Senior Center.

Car show June 4 beginning at 5 p.m. The lodge will be hosting Their first of monthly custom collectible car shows. They will be held every other Thursday. Bring your auto and show it off, or just come by and take a stroll. Food and beverages for sale during the show. 

Alienated Grandparents Anonymous

Are you a grandparent who has been denied visiting your grandchildren? You are not alone. For many different reasons, many grandparents are alienated from their grandchildren; sometimes it’s a misunderstanding, sometimes a problem with an adult child. Join the Rhode Island Alienated Grandparents Anonymous, part of an international support group, whose mission is to offer support, understanding and help validate the feelings of those dealing with the issues of alienation. Conimicut Village Annual Yard Sale

The Conimicut Village annual yard sale is this Saturday, June 6 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Over 20 homes will participate. The map showing the homes is available on Craigs List Yard Sales and also on the Rhode Island Yard Sale site. Many participating homes will also have the maps to distribute. Due to Tidewater Ave. being impassable this year, the residents of Riverview have been invited to join Conimicut Village in their yard sale on June 6. To maximize exposure and be close to all of the yard sale traffic, the Riverview residents will set up tables will all their stuff in Donovan Park in Conimicut Village, right near the clock. Children’s Chorus Auditions

R.I. Children’s Chorus (grades 2-12, four levels) is holding auditions June 6 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) at RI Philharmonic Carter Center, 667 Waterman Ave., East Providence, and June 11 from5-7 p.m.) at St. Luke’s Church, 99 Peirce St, East Greenwich. Square Dance Plus Workshops

Music for a Summer Night

The Apponaug Area Improvement Association presents their 6th annual Music for a Summer Night concert series on the front steps of Warwick City Hall from 6:30-8 p.m. Bring family, friends, a picnic basket and chairs. Bake Sale

The East Greenwich Animal Protection League will be at the Warwick Mall Community Booth for a June bake sale June 13 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Baked goods, homemade dog items, which includes bandanas, stuffed toys, etc. and for your cat, homemade catnip items and toys and many more great things will be for sale. They will also have pictures of the cats and dogs that are available for adoption as well as information about the league. Dropoff of baked goods will be June 12 at 60 Middle Road, East Greenwich, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. or June 13 after 10 a.m at the Warwick Mall Community Booth.

Warwick Figure Skaters Registration

Warwick Figure Skaters will hold an open registration at Warburton Arena (back rink), 975 Sandy Lane, Warwick June 13 and June 14 from 12-1 p.m. Their learn to skate group lesson programs taught by professional instructors will begin July 8 and end Aug. 27. Pet Refuge Walk for No-Kill

Goodwill Grand Raffle

Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island is bringing back its annual grand raffle. The drawing will be held June 15 at the organization’s offices, but those buying tickets do not have to be present to win. The cost of one ticket is $10, while two tickets will cost $15 and three tickets will cost $25. Only 700 tickets will be sold. The top prize is $1,000 cash, or seven days and six nights in Orlando, Fla. The second prize is $500 cash, and the third prize is a laptop computer. Tickets can be purchased by cash, check or money order, and can be obtained by calling Jan Young or Jeff Machado at 861-2080.

Foxwoods Bus trip

The Cranston Senior Guild is planning a bus trip to Foxwoods on July 8. The cost of the trip is $22 per person. The price includes round-trip motor coach bus, one free full buffet coupon or $10 food to any restaurant at the casino, and $10 bonus slot play. The bus will pick up at 9 a.m. from the Dwares JCC, 401 Elmgrove Ave., Providence, and 9:15 a.m. from Rhode Island Mall near Sears Auto Center. The Greater Warwick Lions Club hosts a weekly Tuesday evening Cruise Night beginning at 4 and ending at sundown, running till September, weather permitting. Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announced that preschool registration for the 2015/2016 school year has started. The preschool program is fully funded through Title I. The program will run four half days each week with a parent component every other Friday. They are offering a morning or an afternoon session. Parents are required to attend every other Friday for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Lippitt, Wickes and Norwood areas. Second Division Assoc. Reunion

Moms RI

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just on hour a week. Moms for Moms RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings, and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. This group provides a supportive meeting place for people with aphasia to socialize and share their communication challenges and strategies. There is no charge for participation. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Evening Counseling Available

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or overwhelming stress coupled with an addiction to or dependence on drugs or alcohol, then The Kent Center’s new evening program may be right for you. The Kent Center is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders Program hours are 4:40-8 p.m., making it accessible for people who work. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The groups are confidential and free of charge. For more information call Jessica at 738-1700. 

Free Health Care

Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. For more information, or to arrange a clinic appointment for your preschool aged child, call the VOWS office at 734-3230.
