Carnival Workers Wanted

Car Show

A car show will be held July 4 and 5 to benefit local food banks. The July 4 show will be at Suzy Q’s Place, 208 Plainfield Pike, Scituate. July 5 will be held at Rocky Point and Firestone, 1689 Post Road, Warwick. Entry is $15 and a canned good. Call 949-0900 for more information.

Vacation Bible School

The First Congregational Church of Warwick, 715 Oakland Beach Ave., is having their Vacation Bible School the week of July 6 through July 10 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. There will be activities for ages 3 years old and up through teens.  They ask for a nominal donation of $15 for each child to help offset expenses. Bring a friend and have fun learning.

Norwood Neighborhood Concert Series

Foxwoods Bus trip

The Cranston Senior Guild is planning a bus trip to Foxwoods on July 8. The cost of the trip is $22 per person. The price includes round-trip motor coach bus, one free full buffet coupon or $10 food to any restaurant at the casino, and $10 bonus slot play. The bus will pick up at 9 a.m. from the Dwares JCC, 401 Elmgrove Ave., Providence, and 9:15 a.m. from Rhode Island Mall near Sears Auto Center. Music for a Summer Night

The Apponaug Area Improvement Association presents their 6th annual Music for a Summer Night concert series on the front steps of Warwick City Hall from 6:30-8 p.m. Bring family, friends, a picnic basket and chairs. Concerts will be held July 9 with Joe Esposito; July 23 with the Saucy Jack Band; Aug. 6 with the Ginny Conley Quartet; and Aug. 20 with The Greg Abate Trio. Independence Day Parade & Cookout

The Riverview Neighborhood Association Independence Day parade & cookout will be held June 28. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. at the corner of Cady & Wentworth. Decorate your bikes, cars, boats, wagons, whatever and join in the fun. Invite your family and friends to walk or line the route. They are looking for donations of beverages & desserts. Alienated Grandparents Anonymous

Are you a grandparent who has been denied visiting your grandchildren? You are not alone. For many different reasons, many grandparents are alienated from their grandchildren; sometimes it’s a misunderstanding, sometimes a problem with an adult child. Join the Rhode Island Alienated Grandparents Anonymous, part of an international support group, whose mission is to offer support, understanding and help validate the feelings of those dealing with the issues of alienation. Summer Concert

Every summer the city of Warwick sponsors a series of concerts at different parks. All concerts are on Wednesday nights from 6:30 until 8 p.m. The series kicks off July 1 at Conimicut Point Park with Brass Attack. Bring a blanket or chair. Events are all weather dependent and are all listed on the city’s website www.warwickri.gov.

Flute Ensemble’s Inaugural Concert

The Southern New England Flute Ensemble, directed by John Curran, will host its inaugural concert July 2 at Woodridge Congregational Church, 546 Budlong Road, Cranston. The concert will feature music by Bach, Bizet, Burnette, Dvorak and Ward. Admission is free, and refreshments will follow. For more information call 943-8295.

Greenwood Church Singing

Sing alongside veteran musicians in an encouraging, low-pressure environment. Have fun singing music you love under the direction of professional staff – all for free. Restoring R.I.’s Purple Martin Population

On Sunday, July 5 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Ocean State Bird Club (OSBC) will host Raymond Marr’s discussion and demonstration about restoring the Purple Martin population. After a major storm in 2005, the Martin population in Rhode Island had bottomed out at roughly 50. Learn about Martin’s efforts to create houses for them, which has been instrumental in increasing today’s population to around 300 nesting pairs. Much of Marr’s work has involved discovering and placing the type of housing that Purple Martins prefer for nesting, encouraging property owners to install or let him install Martin Houses on their land, and monitoring and tracking Martin success at these sites each nesting season. Marr will discuss the history of Martin colonies in the state, their favored locations, and population growth. Adult Basketball Leagues

Registration is now open for Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick adult basketball leagues. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick is a premier recreational basketball league includes stats for all games in addition to shirts, college referees, message boards and convenient location. Leagues are continuous, every 15 weeks for individuals and teams alike.

Every league has a 12-game regular season schedule, plus best of three finals. League fees include jerseys. Not included are ref fees and stat-keeper fees. Come join the fun at Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick, Norwood Branch and Oakland Beach Branch.

Vacation Bible School

Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announced that preschool registration for the 2015/2016 school year has started. The preschool program is fully funded through Title I. The program will run four half days each week with a parent component every other Friday. They are offering a morning or an afternoon session. Parents are required to attend every other Friday for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Lippitt, Wickes and Norwood areas. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has an outreach coordinator to assist women in getting free health care If you are between the ages of 40-64 and are underserved or uninsured, call Maria at 456-3105 for a confidential assessment. You may be eligible for free care including mammogram and gynecological care.

Old Warwick Grange #41

The Grange is a fraternal community service, non-profit organization with a special interest in rural life and the traditions of faith, patriotism, leadership and family values Grange where the whole family can go and grow Help them to help others The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. No meetings in July or August. The Grange hall is located at 1175 West Shore Rd.

Developmental Screening 

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
